Foolproof Pot Rice Recipe (No Rice Cooker Needed)

Foolproof Pot Rice Recipe (No Rice Cooker Needed)

If you’ve ever been to a Korean BBQ restaurant, you know that simple bowl of rice they serve?

Soft, slightly sticky, perfectly steamed — this is exactly how you make that rice at home.

If you don’t eat rice every day, a rice cooker isn’t always necessary.
Cooking rice in a pot is simple, faster, and honestly, it tastes better when done right.

I personally prefer making fresh rice, eating what I need, and storing the rest in the fridge. Just reheat in the microwave for about 1 minute, and it’s perfect again.

This method works with any pot: non-stick, stainless steel, or even cast iron.

Cooking Tips

  • Type of Rice
Use Korean rice or Japanese short-grain rice. You can use any Korean white rice (easy to find at H Mart), or Japanese short-grain rice (usually available at Costco). I’ve included my Amazon affiliate links below as examples of the types of rice I recommend.
  • Low Heat Cooking Step
During low heat cooking, you should see a very light, steady steam.
    • no steam -> heat too low
    • too much steam / water overflowing -> heat too high
    • See the cooking gallery photo for reference
  • Do NOT skip resting time
This is key to perfect texture. Do NOT open the lid during the resting time.
  • Storage Tip
Make fresh, eat what you need, then:
    • refrigerate or freeze leftovers
    • microwave 1~2 minutes when ready to eat

Foolproof Pot Rice Recipe

Foolproof pot rice with that classic Korean BBQ texture — soft, fluffy, and perfectly steamed. Any pot works: non-stick, stainless, or cast iron.

Difficulty: Easy - Medium
Prep Time: 35 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 3
Familiarity: Medium - classic KBBQ rice

Ingredients

  • 3 cup rice (1 cup rice = 1 serving)
  • Water

Instructions

  1. Soak rice in water for 30 minutes. This allows the rice to absorb water.
  2. Wash until water is mostly clear
  3. Add water. Water level should be about ½ inch (1–1.5 cm) above the rice
  4. Cook on high heat until boiling
  5. Once it reaches a rolling boil, reduce to very low heat, cover with a lid, and cook for 15 minutes. You want gentle steam coming out continuously. See the cooking gallery photo for reference.
  6. Turn off heat and let it sit for 5 minutes. Do not open the lid.
